Carlos King Wants More Black Reality Shows To Be Produced By Black Production Companies

Carlos King, who runs Kingdom Reign Entertainment, the company behind the hit Love & Marriage franchise, knows a thing or two about producing African American-focused reality television.

Kingdom Reign is behind three Love & Marriage series for OWN set in Huntsville, Detroit and D.C. as well as its latest creation, Family Empire: Houston, which launches today.

There are plenty of others on television such as Basketball Wives LA, Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard and The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

The problem, as King, sees it, is that not enough of these shows are produced by Black-owned production companies.

Carlos King is making another show for OWN.

The producer, who runs Kingdom Reign Entertainment, is behind series including the Love & Marriage franchise. He is now making Family Empire: Houston for the network.

The series follows the multi-generational Braden family of Houston.

Exploring themes of generational wealth and the building of a family legacy, the eight-part unscripted series follows the Bradens across four generations. Sister cousins Nicole, Jermeshia and JaQuita have a collective dream to follow in the footsteps of their grandmother and the Braden family matriarch, Oscarene, a real estate entrepreneur who built the family empire from the ground up.

Reality Producer Carlos King Taking His Podcast on the Road

Carlos King is the latest to take his podcast on the road! ‘Reality with the King’ will tour in 2024, starting in Huntsville, Alabama, with — naturally — ‘Love & Marriage: Huntsville’ castmember Melody Shari.

An unscripted commentator and purveyor, King and his Kingdom Reign Entertainment shingle produce WE TV’s Grown & Gospel and the popular Love & Marriage franchise on OWN — its Huntsville and Detroit-set offerings just recently renewed, while the D.C. version is due to air new episodes in January. He launched his podcast, Reality with the King, in April 2022 and has since brought in more than 7 million downloads. Marquee guests have included NeNe Leakes, Teresa Giudice and Megan McCain.

THR’s 30-ish Most Powerful Producers in Unscripted TV

A massive rising star in the unscripted field, King and his Kingdom Reign production company have become one of the biggest suppliers to OWN. Series Love & Marriage: Huntsville and spinoff Love & Marriage: DC are the top two Saturday players among African American women. More spinoffs are an inevitability. And so confident is OWN in King’s skills, behind the camera and in front of it, he launched the network’s first late night talk show (The Nightcap With Carlos King) in May.

If this weren’t my job, I’d be …

“A psychologist, since that’s really what reality producers are at the end of the day!”

“Carlos Is King” Bleu Magazine Cover Story

From Diddy’s blueprint to becoming the prototype for cable productions, Carlos King’s reality reign can’t stop, and won’t stop.

Known for being a purveyor of pop culture-driven reality television, it is nearly impossible to turn on your television without feeling the dominance of the king – Carlos King. Originating from the great Motor City [Detroit], King – the CEO of Kingdom Reign Entertainment – is seemingly unstoppable when it comes to hot streaks of reality television.

Before the green screen Carlos had drive with a dream. While studying media and journalism at Wayne State University, the go-getter decided to move to New York City where he entered a matrix of interning – ABC’s The View, Def Jam Records, MTV, and later BET.

“I followed Puff Daddy’s school of thought, which was to get an internship because no one is going to turn down a freebie! I was an intern at BET when I was 25 years old. For these kids nowadays that’s the end of the road. But I didn’t care. I knew my road was going to be different. I wanted to get in the business.”
